Gjiro Art

Designing and producing a set of modern fashion products based on traditional motifs

is one of the 5 projects selected in the first call for proposals of the GIZ “Creative Business Network Programme”, targeted to increase the level of professionalism in this sector in Albania.

The Gjirokastra Conservation and Development Organization (GCDO) has initiated its Artisan Programme in 2007 with the opening of the Artisan Shop and creating step by step an artisan Centre in order to revitalize the historic bazaar of Gjirokastra, to demonstrate that arts and crafts have a future, and to broaden the offer of products for tourists.

In line with the new fashion collection, a new interior design of the shop has been created by local architect Kreshnik Merxhani, including furniture and lighting, as well as signage on the façade. The result has been a standard-setting example for artisan shops in Albania which can meet the expectations of international tourists visiting a UNESCO World Heritage City.

It was in the GCDO Artisan Shop that the new products were first presented to the public on occasion of the 5-th National Artisan and Cultural Heritage Fair in Gjirokastra on 30 September 2011. The new products are the flagship selection of the artisan shop around which other products will be developed and selected, and which will become a basis for self-organisation of the artisans of Gjirokastra.
