In 2005, Gjirokastra was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in recognition of the importance of its architecture and unique values.
Many of Gjirokastra’s fortified houses are in a dilapidated state, owing to mass emigration, low occupancy and maintenance expenses. A variety of agencies, led by the Government of Albania, are now co-coordinating efforts to revitalize the historic area of the city by restoring houses, promoting enterprises in the bazaar and encouraging tourists to visit the monuments.
Some of the main donor and entities who have been working in the field of restoration and development are Gjirokastra Foundation, Butrint Foundation, CHwB, GIZ, and AADF.
